Flos is reshuffling its leadership. Pablo Illueca is the new CEO of the Italian lighting manufacturer. This is not a grand appointment from the decorative shop window of design, but a move from the engine room: Illueca comes from Flos’s professional, architecture-driven business.

Illueca has been with the company since 2012. His path began at Antares in Valencia, the production and competence platform for the Flos Architectural collection. He later took on responsibility for the professional business of Flos US, became CEO of Antares in 2020 and has also served as ESG Ambassador of the Flos B&B Italia Group since 2022.

Flos is therefore getting a CEO who knows not only the design face of the brand, but above all its more technical, project-led side. The company operates across Decorative, Architectural, Outdoor and Custom. The real action is likely to sit where design, specification, international projects and sustainability requirements collide.

For the lighting market, this makes the appointment more interesting than a standard CEO announcement with a handshake and a polished quote. It points to where Flos seems to see traction: less icon in the window, more system partner for architects, specifiers and international projects.

The wider group context makes the move more relevant still. The former Design Holding now operates as Flos B&B Italia Group. Its portfolio includes Flos, B&B Italia, Maxalto, Azucena, Arclinea and Lumens. The portfolio has recently been tightened. The Fendi Casa joint venture was ended, Louis Poulsen has been sold. That does not have to be read as a direct line to the CEO appointment. But the timing at least suggests that the group is reorganising its priorities: fewer side stories, more focus on historic core brands.

This is where the PR sheen ends and the real task begins. Flos is one of the great names of Italian design, but even great names now have to explain where growth is supposed to come from when consumer demand is uneven, project cycles are longer and capital providers have less patience than design legends.

In this environment, Illueca stands for professional business, US experience, industrial proximity and ESG. That sounds less romantic than the brand’s famous lighting icons, but it may be precisely the point. In the contract market, aura and authorship are no longer enough. Specification, delivery capability, technical competence and credible sustainability data matter just as much.

Above all this stands Piero Gandini again. The long-time Flos executive and former chairman returned in 2025 as Executive Chairman of Flos B&B Italia Group. Gandini represents design culture and brand authority. Illueca represents execution, architectural lighting and operational closeness.

For Flos, this is not a loud restart. It is more of a quiet signal. Design remains the emotional core. But growth is expected above all where design, technology and project business meet. That is where it will become clear whether this internal promotion is more than a neat continuity story.
