Each cluster follows its own spec logic. Acoustic panels are classified by sound absorption coefficient under ISO 354 in the reverberation chamber and ranked in five absorber classes A to E under ISO 11654. Pods carry the ISO 23351-1 speech level reduction DS,A in classes A+ to D, supplemented by NIC (ASTM E336/E413) and STC in the US market. Acoustic curtains are tested for frequency-dependent absorption in reverberation chamber measurements.
This requirement spread explains the supplier landscape. The acoustics market is served by a broad specialist field — unlike seating, where a handful of full-line manufacturers dominate. Finnish pod manufactures like Framery operate alongside Belgian design houses like BuzziSpace, Swedish ceiling specialists like Ecophon, and US room-in-room system builders, each holding distinct positions.
Two structural forces shape the segment in the late 2020s. Hot-desking and activity-based working have moved acoustic pods from specialty niche to mandatory spec in every ambitious workplace tender. Pod walls in open-space layouts have been standard since around 2020.
Acoustic planning has shifted upstream. It moved from post-occupancy correction into the early architectural phase. LEED v4.1 acoustic credits, the WELL Building Standard's Sound concept, and ANSI/ASA S12.2 background noise criteria now drive specifier conversations early in projects.
Manufacturers like Framery, ROOM, BuzziSpace, Vetrospace, Mute Labs and Mikomax have built a market over ten years that previously did not exist at this level of differentiation. Premium phone booths today carry FF&E list prices in the mid to high four-figure dollar range. Meeting pods for four to six people reach the five-figure range.
What office acoustics means in the contract market
Office acoustics is not defined by a single spec. It is defined by a combination of acoustic principle, spec level and sector context.
The same acoustic panel — polyester fleece with mineral core absorber — can become a wall absorber in an open-space office, a ceiling baffle in a lobby, or a textile partition in a classroom. The difference lies not in the substance but in the acoustic design specifier enters into the room acoustics calculation.
Three dimensions structure the field. The assortment range stretches from 2 cm thick fabric wall elements to 12 m² walk-in meeting rooms. The sectoral anchoring imprints a different requirement family on each cluster. Workplace full-line manufacturers add integrated panel lines.
Acoustic ceilings and baffles form the second cluster. Suspended acoustic ceilings, ceiling rafts, free-hanging baffles, clouds. They reduce reverberation across large areas. They are planned in the architectural phase, not retrofitted.
Meeting pods and phone booths are the third cluster — and the fastest growing. Sound-reducing single-person and multi-person enclosures. They are placed as free-standing modules in open office landscapes, with no structural intervention required. Since 2020 they carry the ISO 23351-1 classification A+ to D as the leading comparison metric.
Room-in-room systems are the fourth cluster. Modular drywall or steel-glass structures. They function as conference rooms, project rooms or quiet zones. They sit between furniture and architecture.
Acoustic curtains and textile solutions are the fifth cluster. Heavy stage curtains, sound-absorbing room divider textiles, sliding curtains with multi-layer construction. Many migrated from hospitality and theatre into the workplace.
Furniture-integrated acoustics is the sixth cluster. Lounge high-backs with acoustically active rear panels, screens with felt or fabric covering, locker-absorber hybrids like BuzziLocker. Solutions that cross the other five clusters and handle both acoustic and functional roles.
Sectoral anchoring
Each cluster shifts its requirement profile when it enters a sector.
In the workplace, three standards dominate. ANSI/ASA S12.2 sets background noise criteria for occupied spaces. LEED v4.1 awards credits for acoustic performance under the Indoor Environmental Quality category. The WELL Building Standard adds the Sound concept with reverberation time, sound masking and speech privacy requirements. Pods, wall absorbers and acoustic ceilings are the lead formats.
In hospitality, the standards logic shifts toward fire safety. NFPA 260/261 and California Technical Bulletin 117-2013 govern textile fire resistance in the US. BS 5852 Crib 5 sets the UK standard. Acoustic baffles in lobbies, textile solutions in restaurants and conference centres, integrated wall and ceiling acoustics in boutique hotels — often part of international chain brand standards.
In healthcare, three requirements take the main roles. Cleanable acoustic absorbers with antimicrobial surfaces under ISO 22196. Wipeable PVC-covered wall and ceiling elements in patient rooms. Speech privacy solutions in consultation rooms and intake areas. HIPAA in the US and equivalent national patient privacy regulations drive the spec.
In education, ANSI S12.60 sets the lead standard. It defines maximum background noise levels and reverberation times for classrooms. Typical classroom reverberation targets sit at 0.6 seconds or below. The standard is widely referenced in US school construction tenders.
In public spaces, fire safety requirements for assembly venues rise. Acoustic requirements for citizen service centres and counter halls follow. Speech privacy requirements for consultation situations complete the picture.
In retail, acoustics moves into store design. Acoustic ceilings on the sales floor. Textile absorbers in consultation zones. Phone booths in back-office areas. The spec follows chain operator CI rather than industry standards.

Pod and booth specialists form the first cluster. Framery from Tampere, ROOM from New York, Vetrospace from Helsinki, Mute Labs from Krakow, Mikomax with the Hush line from Łódź. They operate as pure acoustic enclosure manufactures. Their programmes range from the single phone booth to the 12 m² collaboration zone.
This is the fastest-growing cluster of the past ten years. Framery has held global market leadership since founding in 2010. The Framery O reaches Class A under ISO 23351-1 with 30.3 dB speech level reduction in the Turku University of Applied Sciences comparison study.
Wall and ceiling acoustic specialists form the second cluster. BuzziSpace from Antwerp, Abstracta from Lammhult (part of the Lammhults Design Group), de Vorm from Veenendaal, Snowsound by Caimi Brevetti from Italy, Ecophon (part of Saint-Gobain) from Sweden. They serve the large-area entry segment.
Room-in-room system builders form the third cluster. Lindner from Bavaria, Knauf from Iphofen, Woodtec from Austria. Modular furniture system builders like Bosse Design with Modul Space and USM with the Haller system play here too. The category sits at the interface between furniture and drywall construction.
Specifiers from architectural fit-out compete here with modular furniture system builders. The projects involve entire conference zones, project rooms or quiet zones as self-contained structures inserted into open workplace layouts.
Workplace full-line manufacturers with acoustic lines form the fourth cluster. Wilkhahn with the Asienta family, Sedus with se:lab and se:cube, Walter Knoll with Foster 510 and Vostra, Vitra with Soft Work. A broader group of US, German and Austrian workplace manufactures offers acoustics as integrated components of their workplace worlds.
The acoustic market has no extended design classic heritage. The current product spectrum is largely a phenomenon of the 2010s and 2020s. Framery (2010), ROOM (2018) and the Mikomax Hush line (2014) mark the formative market openings. Older manufactures like Caimi Brevetti (since 1949) and Lammhults (since 1945) entered the acoustic segment only through their acoustic sub-brands Snowsound and Abstracta.
Requirements: spec profile of office acoustics
What distinguishes a contract acoustic solution from a consumer acoustic product can be said in three sentences. It must have a defined material and construction base. It must carry a verifiable measurement trail through the tender. It must feed into a room acoustics calculation prepared by the specifier or a consulting acoustic planner.
The difference from the home-improvement-store acoustic panel is less visual than regulatory. Big-box retailers sell acoustic panels with wall-decor arguments and no absorption measurement. The specifier fills a spec list with absorption coefficient values under ISO 354, absorber classes under ISO 11654, fire safety classifications and reverberation calculations. That list travels as an annex to the tender.

Material DNA and acoustic principles
Acoustic performance in the contract sector follows three physical principles.
Porous absorbers work through friction losses of sound waves in the material structure. They perform best at mid and high frequencies above around 500 Hz. The category covers mineral wool, polyester fibre, PET fleece from recycled bottles, foam and textile structures.
Panel resonators work through the oscillation of a bending-soft panel in front of a cavity. They perform in the low-frequency range below 500 Hz. This is the acoustic weak spot of many pure porous absorber concepts.
Helmholtz resonators work through the oscillation of the air mass in an opening in front of a defined cavity. They are frequency-tuned. Common implementations: perforated wood panels or punched gypsum panels.
The material palette in contract acoustics follows five main lines. Mineral wool (stone or glass wool) is the classic substrate for acoustic ceilings and large-area wall absorbers. Very high absorption coefficient, non-combustible, cost-effective. Limited as a visible surface material.
PET fleece from recycled PET bottles has been the fastest-growing substrate since around 2015. Available in many colours, ESPR-compliant, with absorption coefficients up to αw 0.85 in 25 mm thickness. de Vorm from the Netherlands has shaped this segment.
Polyester fibre fleeces in denser builds serve the mid-price segment, often with textile surface lamination. Felt from wool or polyester is the haptic premium variant for wall elements and screens. BuzziSpace and Submaterial are prominent processors. Perforated wood panels with backing absorber fleece and defined hole pattern serve the design-oriented premium segment. They work as combined Helmholtz-porous absorber systems.
Meeting pods and phone booths follow four construction axes. Wall build as multi-layer system with outer panel, insulation core, inner absorber. Wall thicknesses between 60 and 120 mm. Door system with magnetic or heavy-duty hinges, perimeter seals, threshold detail. The door is the most common weak point.
Glazing with multi-pane insulating glass, optionally with film interlayer for frequency shifting. Ventilation with sound-attenuated fans and acoustically lined supply and exhaust ducts. A pod without active ventilation becomes use-limited within 15 to 20 minutes due to CO₂ rise. These four axes together determine whether a pod lands in Class A (above 30 dB speech level reduction), Class B (25 to 30 dB) or below under ISO 23351-1.
Standards, measurement methods and fire safety
The standards landscape for contract acoustics has four layers.
On the absorber level, ISO 354 defines the measurement procedure in the reverberation chamber. A material is set up in a standardised chamber. The reverberation time difference with and without the material is measured. From that, the frequency-dependent sound absorption coefficient α is calculated.
ISO 11654 translates the frequency-dependent values into a single-number practical sound absorption coefficient αw and into an absorber class from A (αw ≥ 0.90) to E (αw 0.15 to 0.25). Class A is the standard minimum specifier requirement for high-quality wall absorbers and acoustic ceilings.
On the pod level, ISO 23351-1 has been the leading standard since 2020. It measures speech level reduction DS,A in a standardised laboratory test. A defined speech signal is played inside the pod. The A-weighted sound level outside is measured. The difference is calculated as a single-number value.
The classes run from A+ (above 33 dB) through A (30 to 33 dB), B (25 to 30 dB), C (20 to 25 dB) to D (below 20 dB). The minimum requirement for functional speech privacy in a typical open-space office is 25 dB — Class B. Premium phone booths from Framery, Mikomax and Vetrospace operate at Class A. Class A+ is not yet achieved by any market participant.
Parallel pod measurements are NIC (Noise Isolation Class, US market under ASTM E336/E413) and STC (Sound Transmission Class, US market under ASTM E413). Neither is pod-specific. They offer limited comparability across products.
On the room level, US specifications work with ANSI/ASA S12.2 for background noise criteria in occupied spaces. ANSI S12.60 sets classroom acoustics standards. LEED v4.1 awards credits under Indoor Environmental Quality for acoustic performance — background noise, sound transmission, reverberation, sound reinforcement and masking. The WELL Building Standard adds the Sound concept with seven features covering reverberation, sound masking, sound barriers and hearing health.
Fire safety follows three reference frameworks. ASTM E84 (Steiner Tunnel test) for surface burning characteristics in the US. NFPA 260/261 for upholstered furniture and California Technical Bulletin 117-2013 for textile and foam materials. BS 5852 Crib 5 in the UK for textile builds in hospitality. In the European market, EN 13501-1 with classes B-s1, d0 (low flammability) and A2-s1, d0 (non-combustible) governs the same field.
In the pod market, the EU Machinery Directive applies to electrical components (ventilation, lighting). CE marking covers the overall construction. From December 2027, the EU Cyber Resilience Act applies to networked pod components (booking systems, IoT sensors) for products sold in the European market.
Tendering logic and lifecycle
Procurement logic in the acoustic segment differs structurally from the furniture purchase.
In large projects, acoustic planning is prepared by an external acoustic consultant or building physics expert. The deliverable contains the room acoustics calculation per room, the derivation of required absorption material, and the spec list for the tender.
For pods, a dedicated pod spec block has become common since around 2022. It defines the ISO 23351-1 class, internal dimensions, ventilation capacity and booking system integration. Procurement agents like Benjamin West, HPG or Hirsch Bedner Associates handle acoustic procurement in larger workplace and hospitality projects.
In mid-sized projects, the interior designer or workplace consultant typically handles acoustic planning in simplified form. Manufacturer pre-engineering tools support this — Ecophon, Knauf and BuzziSpace offer their own calculation modules. Or planners use flat absorber area assumptions per square foot of office space.
Procurement here runs through workplace dealers or directly with the acoustic manufacturer. For standalone pod purchases without overall acoustic planning, only the ISO 23351-1 class and external dimensions are typically specified.
Lifecycle assumptions vary by product cluster.
Acoustic panels and wall absorbers are calculated at 10 to 15 years of useful life. The acoustic performance itself ages slowly. Wear sits on fabric coverings, mounting and cleanliness.
Acoustic ceilings reach 15 to 20 years. Suspended systems often last longer because they sit behind visible maintenance fields.
Meeting pods and phone booths sit at 8 to 12 years. Wear runs on door mechanics, ventilation, lighting and electronic components, not on the acoustic substance. Electronic components also face a faster innovation cycle through booking system integration and IoT sensors.
Room-in-room systems reach 20 to 25 years like classic drywall structures. Acoustic curtains sit at 8 to 12 years as the most wear-prone cluster. Fabric ageing, UV exposure and cleaning cycles shorten lifespan.
The refurbishment market for pods is emerging. Framery launched its own refurbishment programme in 2024. Used pods are industrially overhauled and resold with reduced warranty.
Current developments in the acoustics market
The acoustic market is shifting along three axes in the mid-2020s.
Global market dynamics, with pod specialists growing into independent market players with investor backing. Anyone specifying a pod in a 2030 consulting project will argue across all three axes simultaneously.
Global market dynamics
The global market for office acoustic solutions has grown in double digits in nearly every reporting year since 2015.
Industry observers like Frost & Sullivan and trade publications estimate the global volume for office pods and phone booths in 2026 at around 1.2 to 1.5 billion euros. Annual growth rates sit between 12 and 18 percent. The drivers: the workplace re-investment wave in North America and Europe, hot-desking conversion in existing offices, and increasing adoption in hospitality and education.
The market for acoustic panels, wall and ceiling absorbers is significantly larger at an estimated global volume of 4 to 6 billion euros. It grows at low single-digit rates and is structurally more consolidated as a mature market.
The corporate landscape in the acoustic market has consolidated markedly over the past five years.
Framery from Tampere was acquired by Finnish investment firm Vaaka Partners in 2020. Since then it has grown from pod specialist to global workplace hardware provider with over 800 employees.
Ecophon has been part of Saint-Gobain, the French building products group, since 1990. It supplies the European acoustic ceiling volume segment. Abstracta is part of the Swedish Lammhults Design Group, which runs a workplace portfolio with Lammhults, Voice, Ire and Morgana.
BuzziSpace passed majority ownership to Belgian PE investor Down2Earth in 2021. It has been expanding more strongly into the US market since. ROOM from New York raised over 60 million US dollars in venture capital across several funding rounds between 2018 and 2024. It operates in a direct-to-buyer logic unusual in traditional workplace distribution.
Mid-sized acoustic specialists operate in parallel in a specification layer where the individual architectural specification decides. Mikomax and Hushoffice from Poland, Mute Labs from Krakow, Vetrospace from Helsinki, de Vorm from the Netherlands, Snowsound by Caimi Brevetti from Italy. None has reached the dominance Framery has built.
The US pod manufacturer landscape is led by ROOM and Steelcase Work Tents. Loop Phone Booth from Brooklyn and Zenbooth from Oakland complete the direct-to-buyer segment without yet entering the European specifier market at scale.
Activity-based working and pods
The structural transformation of office acoustic design is the single largest movement in the market over the past ten years.
Activity-based working — the organisation of office zones by activity type rather than fixed seat assignment — has two acoustic consequences.
First, acoustic diversity on the office floor increases. Focus zones, collaboration zones, phone zones and break areas each require different reverberation and speech privacy. Second, single-call acoustic separation moves out of the closed private office into the free-standing pod module. This shift created the pod industry in the first place.
Typical pod density in contemporary workplace layouts sits in the single-digit pod count per 100 employees, by industry rule of thumb. It depends on activity profile, occupancy rate and pod mix between single-booth and multi-person pod.
Video-call-heavy profiles run higher. Classic transactional profiles run lower. The pod mix has shifted since around 2022 from single-booth dominance toward a more balanced split between single booths and 2- to 4-person meeting pods. Multi-participant video calls in the open space have become routine.
The pod market has settled on a quasi-standard architecture.
Sound reduction under ISO 23351-1 Class A or B as minimum in the premium segment, Class C in the price-sensitive mid-market. Ventilation with automatic CO₂-controlled activation. Lighting with dimmable LED modules, often with tunable white for time-of-day adjustment.
Booking system integration via Outlook, Microsoft Teams or dedicated workplace management platforms like Robin, Condeco or the pod manufacturer's own app. IoT sensors for occupancy detection, air quality and usage analytics. This component list is mandatory inventory in the late-2020s pod market, no longer premium differentiation.
Furniture-integrated acoustics has expanded in parallel.
Lounge high-backs with acoustically active rear panels like the BuzziNest programme from BuzziSpace. The Soft Work sofa landscape from Vitra with integrated fabric acoustic surfaces. The HushFollow high-backs from Mikomax. Comparable programmes from Walter Knoll (Foster 510), Wilkhahn (Asienta) and Sedus (se:lab).
They serve the acoustic middle ground between open space and pod — for conversations that need more privacy than the open bench row but less effort than a pod booking. This furniture-acoustic hybrid has established itself as its own sub-segment since around 2018.
Regulation: LEED, WELL, ESPR
The regulatory wave from the mid-2020s hits the acoustic market on three levels.
On the workplace level, two voluntary standards have become de-facto mandatory in the US specifier market. LEED v4.1 awards credits for acoustic performance under the Indoor Environmental Quality category — background noise, sound transmission, reverberation, sound masking. The WELL Building Standard adds the Sound concept with seven features covering reverberation, sound masking, sound barriers and hearing health.
Both standards are voluntary but function as procurement requirements in corporate fit-outs and public projects. Anyone specifying a workplace project for a LEED-targeting or WELL-certifying client must reference acoustic performance from the project start. ANSI/ASA S12.2 and ANSI S12.60 provide the underlying technical references.
On the product level, the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) has been in force as a European framework regulation since July 2024. It rolls out by product group. The furniture sector — including acoustic panels, wall absorbers, pods and acoustic curtains — follows in the Working Plan 2025–2030 with expected binding effect from 2027.
ESPR requires three things. Increased requirements for durability, repairability and recyclability. A Digital Product Passport (DPP) that provides per product machine-readable material history, supply chain, disassembly instructions and repair information. A ban on the destruction of unsold consumer goods.
For the acoustic market this means concretely: PET fleece manufacturers like de Vorm are structurally well positioned because their recycled materials carry the DPP logic natively. Mineral wool-based acoustic ceilings must document disassembly capability and material purity — a requirement that some established systems must catch up on.
ESPR applies to products placed on the European market, which affects US and global manufacturers selling into Europe. For globally active manufactures, the European rules set an emerging international baseline.
On the pod-specific level, two regulations apply in parallel.
ISO 23351-1 has been the industry standard for speech level reduction since 2020. All relevant pod manufacturers have incorporated it into their data sheets. Specifier spec sheets increasingly request a minimum class.
From December 2027, the EU Cyber Resilience Act applies to all networked products sold in the European market. This includes pods with booking system integration, IoT sensors and cloud components. Pod manufacturers must from that date document the cyber security of their networked components and keep it current over the product lifecycle.
This dual regulation is still poorly understood in the market. It will keep pod manufacturers busy over the next 18 months, similar to how it is affecting locker manufacturers in the storage segment.
A fourth regulatory axis concerns material emissions. The REACH restriction on formaldehyde emissions from wood materials takes effect on 6 August 2026 with a limit of 0.062 mg/m³. It affects the acoustic market indirectly — MDF and particleboard substrates used in acoustic panels, perforated wood panels, and wood components in pod wall builds all fall under this regulation. For US manufacturers exporting to Europe, the formaldehyde limit applies to products placed on the EU market.

The manufacturers are mostly acoustic specialists with distinct design languages.
BuzziSpace from Antwerp has shaped European wall acoustics since 2007. The BuzziSkin, BuzziFalls and BuzziGrid lines appear in many DACH workplace projects. The brand works consistently with designers like Alain Gilles and 13&9 Design.
Abstracta from Lammhult (part of the Lammhults Design Group) delivers a broad wall programme. The Soneo, Triline and Scala lines combine Scandinavian restraint with high Möbelfakta certification — important for specifier acceptance in the Nordic workplace market.
de Vorm from Veenendaal has shaped the PET fleece segment. The PET Felt Acoustic Panel and AK 1 wall system are made entirely from recycled PET bottles. Cradle-to-Cradle certified — structurally advantageous for ESPR compliance from 2027.
Snowsound by Caimi Brevetti from Nova Milanese is the design-oriented premium brand. Snowsound Art with artistic motifs, Flap with multi-layer felt, Stand and Mitesco as sculptural standing absorbers. Designers like Mario Bellini and Sezgin Aksu sign many of the lines.

Acoustic ceilings and baffles form the large-area acoustic entry segment. They are planned in the architectural phase. General planners or acoustic consultants specify them. Three formats dominate: suspended ceiling systems, free-floating rafts, and vertical baffles.
The manufacturers are mostly industrial building product suppliers from the drywall tradition.
Ecophon (part of Saint-Gobain) from Hyllinge has been the global market leader for contract acoustic ceilings since 1958. The Ecophon Master, Focus, Solo and Akusto lines cover the full spectrum. The material base is high-density glass wool with glass fleece surface. Absorber Class A under ISO 11654 is standard. The highest fire class A2-s1, d0 under EN 13501-1 is reached by most lines.
