Republic of Fritz Hansen
Republic of Fritz Hansen is a Danish furniture brand. Its origins trace to master carpenter Fritz Hansen, who obtained a trade licence in Copenhagen in 1872 and opened a furniture production company in Christianshavn in 1885. His son Christian E. Hansen took over the firm in 1899 with 50 employees and soon relocated production to Allerød, north of Copenhagen — where the headquarters remain to this day. In 1932, grandsons Poul and Søren Hansen assumed joint management; under their influence, Bauhaus functionalism entered the company's design philosophy. The first collaboration with Arne Jacobsen began in 1934. In 1982, the company acquired the rights to the Poul Kjærholm collection. Jacob Holm became CEO in 1998 and initiated the transformation into a global consumer brand. The name Republic of Fritz Hansen was introduced in 2000. The company is owned by Chr. Augustinus Fabrikker Akts., part of the Augustinus Foundation.
The programme covers chairs, sofas, tables, lighting and accessories. Canonical products by Arne Jacobsen include the Ant™ (1952), Series 7™ (1955), Grand Prix™ (1957), Swan™ and Egg™ (1958, both designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen). Further classics include Piet Hein's Super-Elliptical Table (1968) and Poul Kjærholm's PK22™ and PK80™. Active design partnerships include Cecilie Manz, Kasper Salto, Piero Lissoni, Jaime Hayon, Benjamin Hubert and Hiromichi Konno. The lighting brand Lightyears is part of the group.
