Functionals is a Dutch design furniture brand, launched in 2009 by siblings Ad and Simon van Esch as a webshop with the Bonsai candleholder and Swivel Floor light. Ad and Simon van Esch are the second generation of the van Esch entrepreneurial family: their father Henk van Esch founded in 1972 in Goirle a company that began with liturgical objects, evolved through metal fittings for ships into a specialised manufacturer of coat racks, lockers, benches, showcases and related products for public meeting spaces. Ad and Simon literally grew up in the van Esch factory and transformed it into the specialised business it is today. Since January 2025, van Esch and Functionals have been united under the joint name Functionals as one brand — with a new logo, new corporate identity and the brand promise "Organising Spaces": living and working start with an ordered environment.
