Donghia
Donghia is an American luxury lifestyle brand for furniture, textiles, wallcoverings, lighting and accessories, founded in 1968 by Angelo Donghia — an Italian-American interior designer who significantly shaped the American design scene of the 1970s and 1980s through his furniture designs, textiles and interiors. In 1972 he founded Donghia Associates as an interior design firm for residential and hospitality projects. In 1976 the first Donghia showroom opened in Los Angeles (attended at opening by Diane von Furstenberg and Joel Schumacher, among others). In 1978 Donghia Furniture was founded, in 1980 Donghia Textiles. Angelo Donghia's clientele included Ralph Lauren, Halston, Diana Ross, Barbara Walters and Mary Tyler Moore. Three years before his death in 1985, the retail revenue from products designed and licensed by Donghia was reported at $67.5 million. Angelo Donghia died in 1985 at the age of 50. The company continued as a private business. 2005: acquired by the Rubelli Group (Venice — a family business and textile manufacturer). April 2020: Chapter 7 bankruptcy and closure of showrooms. August 2020: Kravet Inc. acquired the brand, intellectual property, designs, archives and inventory. From spring 2021: distribution through Kravet showrooms in North America and the international Kravet network. Creative director: Doug Garfinkle.
Brand DNA: simplicity of lines, purity of materials, sensual textures. Motto: "Live a Well-Tailored Life." Distribution format: To-the-Trade only — exclusively through architects and interior designers. Products: furniture (Made in USA: sofas, chaises, armchairs, tables, beds, sideboards, desks, étagères); lighting (chandeliers, sconces, table and floor lamps — all handmade on Murano, Venice); textiles (mohair velvets — 30 colour variants, double-sided wool flannel, Lurex, metallic grasscloths); wallcoverings (including metallic grasscloths as a brand signature); rugs (added to the range from 2022). The relaunch under Kravet encompasses over 40 furniture pieces in signature shapes alongside the complete archive collection.
