Flou
Flou is a north-Italian design brand for beds and bedroom furniture, founded in 1978 in Meda (Province of Monza-Brianza, Lombardy) by Rosario Messina — a visionary entrepreneur from Sicily who had previously worked as sales director and commercial director of several furnishing companies and most recently at Bassetti, contributing to the development of textiles for the furniture sector and the launch of the duvet on the Italian market. The founding of Flou in 1978 was immediately linked to the market launch of the Nathalie bed — the first modern textile upholstered bed with fully removable and washable covers, designed by Vico Magistretti. Nathalie revolutionised the concept of the bedroom: from a static, monochrome space to a dynamic, colourful, vivid living area. In 2012 the Nathalie bed was recognised as a "Design Icon" and protected under copyright law as a work of art — despite industrial series production. In 2020 it received the Compasso d'Oro ADI for Product Lifetime Achievement with the motivation: "typological innovation in the textile bed sector; over time this bed has embodied a perfect synthesis of function and poetry." In 2004 the company as a whole received the Compasso d'Oro. Rosario Messina was awarded the Compasso d'Oro ADI Career Award, the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the Made in Italy Award New York and the Gold Medal of the Confindustria Monza. In 2013 Flou founded Natevo — Italy's first company for furniture with LED lighting integrated in the structure. Flou is represented in over 50 countries.
Designer collaborations: Vico Magistretti (Nathalie, historical), Carlo Colombo, Rodolfo Dordoni, Matteo Nunziati (Gaudì table, ADA Award 2023), the Touch Studio (Madame Butterfly — sofas and armchairs, ADA Award 2023). Product range: over 30 models of single, double, sofa and convertible beds in fabric, wood, leather and hide; mattresses, pillows, bed bases; sofas, armchairs, coffee tables; bedroom furniture (bedside tables, chests of drawers, wardrobes); outdoor collection; bed linens and covers in evolving collections. Natevo: furniture with integrated LED lighting as a sub-brand. Flagship showrooms: Milan, New York, Los Angeles; partnership with I.F.O. Italian Fit Out for luxury contract projects.
For architects and interior designers seeking for residential and hospitality projects a Brianza sleeping and living brand that in 1978 with Vico Magistretti's Nathalie bed founded a new product category of the upholstered textile bed, which with 2× Compasso d'Oro and protection-worthiness as a work of art belongs to the canonical design objects of Italian design history, and which with a total living range of beds, sofas, tables and outdoor furniture designs all living areas from a single source — Flou is a good address in the segment of the Italian upholstered bed pioneer of the second Compasso d'Oro generation.
