Extremis

Extremis is a Belgian furniture company for indoor and outdoor furniture, founded in 1994 by Dirk Wynants (b. 1964, son of a carpenter) in a wooden barn in the rural Westhoek region of the Flemish countryside, near Poperinge (West Flanders, Belgium) — where the company still maintains its headquarters and production to this day (Couthoflaan 20b, 8972 Poperinge). Wynants studied interior architecture and furniture design at the Sint-Lucas Institute of Architecture in Ghent, Belgium. The origin of the brand is as concrete as could be: as a young father in 1994, Dirk Wynants searched for the right garden table for his family — and couldn't find one. He built it himself, with a focus on quality, ecology and the most essential thing: being together. From this table came Gargantua — a round table with four surrounding benches, height-adjustable, suitable for any body size, a singular outdoor furniture piece in design history that after more than 25 years of production is still in use worldwide in many of its original examples. Extremis was thereby one of the very first brands to establish "designer outdoor furniture" as an independent product category. The company's leitmotif — "Tools for Togetherness" — is borrowed from a Shaker maxim: "Don't make anything unless it is both necessary and useful." Extremis is part of the Steelcase portfolio.

Designer collaborations (selection): Dirk Wynants (Gargantua — design classic since 1994; Kosmos — lounge-deck concept with integrated sun sails and dimmable lighting; Hopper — picnic table with lowered entry points at bench ends; Walrus — modular lounge system with integrated storage for cushions and blankets; Manille — modular picnic table with inclusive design for wheelchair users + sun system integration; AMAi), Xavier Lust (PicNik — 2002, single sheet of metal formed into tabletop and side seats), Robin Rizzini / Metrica Studio (white range extensions), Arnold Merckx (Extempore — wood-aluminium combination, first of its kind), Globalhaus (Sticks — room divider from thin rods). Materials: aluminium, wood, steel, synthetic materials. Awards (selection): Henry van de Velde Award (Belgium, 2001, 2003), Interior Innovation Award (imm Cologne, 2003, 2004, 2005), Red Dot Award (2005), iF Design Award Silver (2003), Good Design Award (Chicago, 2004), IF Gold Award, FX International Design Award. Entrepreneurial awards: Independent Entrepreneur of the Year Belgium (2001), Hermes Award (2002), Leeuw van de Export Award (2002).

For architects and workplace designers seeking for public, gastronomy, educational and residential projects a Belgian outdoor and indoor furniture brand that in 1994 with the Gargantua picnic table helped found the category of "designer outdoor furniture," materialises the concept "Tools for Togetherness" as a social design principle in every product, has developed furniture icons with Walrus, Kosmos, Manille and PicNik that continue to convince formally and functionally after decades, and as part of the Steelcase portfolio offers global project availability — Extremis is one of the key addresses in the segment of Belgian social design outdoor furniture.
