Royal Auping is the largest independent bed manufacturer in the Netherlands, based and producing in Deventer (Overijssel). The company traces its origins to 1888, when blacksmith Johannes Auping was commissioned by a local hospital to build more hygienic beds than the straw mattresses then in use. He developed a mattress made from interwoven steel springs; two years later the first larger order came from Amsterdam's Civil Hospital for forty beds. In 1912 Auping opened his factory in Deventer. The brand has remained family-owned to this day, with the family still holding a large majority stake. For its 100th anniversary the company received the addition of "Koninklijk" (Royal) and has since traded as Koninklijke Auping BV. Auping is B Corp certified (B Impact Score 85.8).
