U.S. furniture retailer American Home Furniture & Mattress has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The nearly 90-year-old, family-owned chain says it plans to continue operating while restructuring its business.
As part of the process, the company will close its stores in Santa Fe and Farmington while keeping its two locations in Albuquerque open. “This is a reorganization — not a liquidation,” said Chairman and CEO Kenton Van Harten. Existing and new customer orders will continue to be fulfilled, and gift cards will remain valid.
The company cited rising costs driven by inflation and tariffs, along with weak demand in the furniture market. One additional factor: a long-running freeway construction project that has disrupted access to one of its key stores.
The case fits a broader pattern. Furniture retailers across the U.S. are facing a difficult market environment, shaped by a sluggish housing sector, cautious consumers, and rising costs — forcing many companies to restructure or scale back operations.
