System 180
System 180 is a Berlin manufacturer of modular office and residential furniture as well as constructive architectural systems. The company was founded in the early 1980s by Prof. Jürg Steiner, architect, designer and exhibition builder. Name origin: the basic dimension of 180 mm — a widely used grid standard in interior design. Development history: "System Steiner" → inclusion in the Berlin design agency "Berliner Zimmer" → part of the "New German Design" movement → System 180 GmbH. Company address: Ernst-Augustin-Straße 3, 12489 Berlin (Berlin Adlershof — Berlin's most modern science and technology park). Production area: 7,500 m². 100% production in Berlin. Two business areas: (1) modular furniture for office and residential use; (2) architectural solutions for temporary structures and listed buildings. Certifications: EMAS (environmental management system); PEFC-certified MDF from sustainable forestry. Awards: Focus Open (silver), Red Dot Design Award, multiple iF Design Awards; SitUp module: Audience Award Active Office Award and Iconic Award.
Core system: stainless steel tube construction system (SteelLine, WhiteLine/SandLine/GraphiteLine/BlackLine and ColourLine) with MDF panels; 13 colours and 2 real wood veneers; all modules interchangeable and upgradable. Spectacular reference projects: 400-metre temporary façade at Berlin-Tempelhof Airport; floating UFO in the Deutsches Museum Munich. Product lines: Design Thinking Line (developed in collaboration with the School of Design Thinking at the Hasso Plattner Institute Potsdam — tables, boards and multifunctional storage solutions on castors); PartiLine (highly flexible room divider system: CreativeParti, OpenParti, GardenParti, QuietParti and RemoteParti); Mobile Space System (hybrid solutions for focused work and collaboration); K table system, PackPod (folding tables), SitUp (modular tiered seating) and SpeakerDesk. Philosophy: "functional honesty" — function comes first, design emerges from function.
System 180 is for architects, workplace planners and educational institutions the Berlin address for modular interior systems that treat longevity, reconfigurability and design quality as equal construction principles — since the early 1980s, with a system philosophy grown out of exhibition and trade fair construction, which to this day enables spectacular architectural installations as much as the individual office workstation.
