SICIS is an Italian company for luxury mosaics, glass surface systems, furniture, textiles and jewellery. It was founded in 1987 by Maurizio Leo Placuzzi in Ravenna — the city renowned as the world capital of mosaic art since Late Antiquity and the Byzantine era. The company name is a Latin acronym: "Sic Immensos Clarosque Inceptos Somniavi" — "This is how I dreamed of great and famous undertakings." As early as 1988, SICIS secured its first major international commission for Saudi Sheikh Al Gosaibi; in 1989 the Ritz Paris Spa followed. In 1989, Maurizio Placuzzi also patented the Doppio Indiretto laying method, which revolutionised the processing and transport of artistic mosaics. The design studio has been active since 1992. 1994: first Murano glass mosaic collection. The Ravenna workshop employs graduates of the Accademia d'Arte Mosaica Ravenna. Company headquarters: 85,000 m², Via Canala, Ravenna.
Core patents and innovations: Iridium (iridescent glass, 1998), Vetrite® (flexible composite glass sheets made from glass, polymers and metals — bendable, usable on both sides). Metallismo mosaics: steel and brass with a patented anti-oxidation process. SICIS Jewels (since 2012, daughter Gioia Placuzzi): micromosaic combined with precious stones. Range: glass mosaics (700+ colours, including Waterglass, Glimmer and Antigua), marble mosaics (Cosmati collection), metal mosaics, Vetrite® glass sheets, furniture, lighting and textiles. Hospitality references: Bellagio Las Vegas, Burj Al Arab Dubai and Mahmood Saeed Oasis Mall Saudi Arabia (42,000 m²). Flagship stores and projects on five continents.
SICIS is for architects, luxury hotel developers and superyacht interior designers the international leading address for mosaic as a versatile, patented and artisanally realised luxury material — from wall cladding and furniture surfaces to jewellery and textiles.
