The company was founded on 23 October 1665 under Louis XIV as the Manufacture royale de glaces de miroirs in Paris — with the mandate to break Venetian dominance in mirror glass production. The first mirrors for the Galerie des Glaces at Versailles came from this operation. Production was later relocated to the northern French village of Saint-Gobain, which gave the company its name. By 1992, Saint-Gobain was the world's largest glass manufacturer. Today the group operates in 80 countries, employs approximately 162,000 people and generated revenue of approximately €50 billion in 2024.
