Ruckstuhl

Ruckstuhl AG is a Swiss carpet manufactory and the oldest of its kind in Switzerland. The company was founded in 1881 by Moritz Ruckstuhl in Melchnau, Canton of Bern, and relocated to Langenthal three years later. In 1918, the company was converted into a joint-stock corporation and handed over to son Walter Ruckstuhl. In 1977, Peter Ruckstuhl assumed management as the fourth generation and introduced tufting technology for wool products. In 1987, Ruckstuhl co-founded the design event Designers' Saturday in its own production halls. In 1992, the Danish company Skandinavisk Kokosvæverie SKANKO A/S was acquired. Since 1999, Ruckstuhl has produced at the former Porzellanfabrik Langenthal premises (Bleienbachstrasse 9) — its current headquarters.

The range covers carpets and floor coverings exclusively from natural fibres: coir, sisal, virgin wool, linen, jute and goat hair. Eighty-five per cent of the programme is produced in Switzerland. The classics CALICUT (coir, 1967) and JAIPUR (sisal, 1972) remain in the current collection. Looms up to 80 years old are in active use; for custom orders, robot-assisted tufting technology and CAD cutting are employed. Editions collections are created in collaboration with internationally recognised designers including Alfredo Häberli, Arik Levy, Matteo Thun, Patricia Urquiola, Atelier Oï and Hussein Chalayan. Further collaborations include Collection Trix & Robert Haussmann and Schwarznase carpets from the wool of Valais Blacknose sheep (with the label NEESCHI). Reference projects: Swiss National Museum Zurich, Hotel Meilenstein Langenthal.

Ruckstuhl is the most precise address for architects and interior designers seeking natural fibre carpets of Swiss origin — a company that has consolidated craft tradition, ecological rigour and an exceptional designer-collaboration strategy over more than 140 years within a deliberately compact manufactory.
