Montis

Montis is a Dutch furniture manufacturer for contemporary upholstered furniture, tables and chairs — founded in 1974 by Gerard and Ton van den Berg (brothers) in Dongen (North Brabant, Netherlands), a region home to some of the world's finest leather tanneries. The name Montis is the Latin genitive of mons (montis), "of the mountains", a reference to the founders' family name. Two craftsmen — an upholsterer and a leather cutter — formed the first five employees. In 1983 Gerard van den Berg developed the groundbreaking "Jacket technique" — a zip-fastened cover over metal structures that gave rise to the Chaplin chair and revolutionised the furniture world. Van den Berg left the company in 1990; the brand has since developed further with its own foam moulding facility — the only one of its kind in the Netherlands, enveloping curved steel frameworks in polyurethane foam and minimising waste while guaranteeing comfort over generations. Current production site: own factory in Dongen. Distribution: 40+ countries.

Guiding philosophy: "Question everything, keep the good" — modern, pragmatic design with warm, friendly character. Materials: all woods from European, sustainably managed forests; locally sourced from the Netherlands and neighbouring countries. Designers: Gerard van den Berg (Chaplin, Florence, Butterfly, Rocky, Ringo, Yves), Gijs Papavoine (Axel, Domino, Windy), Arian Brekveld (Back Me Up), Christophe Marchand, Dick Spierenburg, Gert Batenburg, Simon Pengelly. Iconic products: Axel (sofa), Chaplin (chair), Domino.18, Florence, Ringo, Marvin, Fox.

For architects and interior designers seeking for luxury residential, premium hospitality and demanding residential and contract projects a Dutch furniture company founded in 1974 by Gerard and Ton van den Berg in Dongen (North Brabant, Netherlands) that with the 1983 patented Jacket technique (Chaplin chair), the only foam moulding facility in the Netherlands, sustainable European woods, the credo "Question everything, keep the good" and designers including Gerard van den Berg, Gijs Papavoine and Christophe Marchand operates in 40+ countries — Montis patented the Jacket technique in 1983 and revolutionised the upholstered furniture world with a zip: the Chaplin chair as proof, the only foam moulding facility in the Netherlands as foundation — "Question everything, keep the good" as compass since 1974.
