Lema

Lema is an Italian family company for design furniture — founded around 1970 in Alzate Brianza (Province of Como, Brianza, Lombardy) by brothers Luigi and Enrico Meroni (LEMA stands for Luigi Enrico Meroni Arredamenti). The family tradition reaches back to the 1930s: Angelo Meroni (grandfather) opened a workshop for classic furniture in Arosio at that time; in the 1950s a shop in Milan followed. The breakthrough came in the early 1970s: Lema emerged as the first Italian company to produce integrated furniture systems with load-bearing side panels in multiple finishes on an industrial basis. The factory was designed by Angelo Mangiarotti. Today Angelo Meroni (grandson, same name) leads the company; artistic director since 1994: Piero Lissoni. Production sites: Alzate Brianza and Giussano (both Mangiarotti-designed), total 55,000 m², over 250 employees, approximately 1,000 retailers in more than 65 countries.

Structural milestones: Lo Scaffale (Tito Agnoli, first industrial shelving system with load-bearing side panels and multiple finishes), Selecta (shelving system 1995), Armadio al Centimetro (bespoke wardrobe programme, revised multiple times since first launch), T030 (Piero Lissoni). Three business divisions: Home (residential), Atelier (exclusive and bespoke), Contract (hospitality, real estate, office). Designer collaborations: Piero Lissoni (artistic director), Tito Agnoli, Angelo Mangiarotti, Chiara Andreatti, Gordon Guillaumier, Roberto Lazzeroni, David Lopez Quincoces (LT40), Neri & Hu, Raw Edges, Francesco Rota, Tokujin Yoshioka, Nendo, Werner Aisslinger.
