Fritz Hansen

Fritz Hansen is one of the most significant Danish furniture brands, founded in 1872 by cabinet maker Fritz Hansen (from Nakskov, Lolland), who initially obtained a trading licence in Copenhagen. In 1885 he opened his own furniture production company; by 1887 the workshop in Christianshavn was thriving. In the company's first fifty years, the Danish Parliament and Supreme Court at Christiansborg Palace, the University Library and Copenhagen City Hall were among its clients. In 1909 production was relocated to Allerød (north of Copenhagen) — the company's location to this day. Son Christian E. Hansen took over management in 1899. In the 1930s, his sons Poul and Søren Hansen initiated an era of technical innovation: steam bending for wood and steel became core competences. In 1932 the first collaboration with Arne Jacobsen began (Bellevue/Bellavista project, Klampenborg). In 1944 Hans J. Wegner created the China Chair™. In 1952 followed the Ant Chair™ (Jacobsen), in 1955 the Series 7™ — both in continuous production to this day. In 1958 Jacobsen designed the Egg™ and Swan™ for the SAS Royal Hotel Copenhagen. 1980: acquisition of the Poul Kjærholm collection. 2000: introduction of the strategic concept "Republic of Fritz Hansen" to transform from a production company into a global design brand. 2015: acquisition of Danish lighting company Lightyears. Owner: Chr. Augustinus Fabrikker Akts. (Augustinus Foundation). CEO: Henrik Steensgaard. 310 employees worldwide. Presence in over 85 countries, 2,000 points of sale, flagship stores in Copenhagen, New York, London, Seoul, Shanghai, Munich and Tokyo.

Classic collection: Egg™, Swan™, Series 7™, Ant™, Grand Prix™, Oxford™ (all Arne Jacobsen), PK22™, PK80™, PK61™ (Poul Kjærholm), China Chair™ (Hans J. Wegner), Church Chair (Kaare Klint — produced until 2004). Contemporary collection: Ro™, Fri™, Lune™ sofa (Jaime Hayon), Caravaggio™ lamp (Cecilie Manz), Ice™, Little Friend™, NAP™, Pluralis™ table (Kasper Salto). Current collaborations also with Piero Lissoni, Jasper Morrison. Materials: moulded beech plywood, foam, steel, aluminium, leather, fabrics.

For architects and interior designers seeking for residential, hotel and contract projects the most significant Danish design furniture brand of Modernism, which since 1872 in Allerød has co-written Danish design history through collaborations with Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Hans J. Wegner and Kaare Klint, is responsible for three of the world's most canonical and most-produced design objects of the 20th century with the Egg™, Swan™ and Series 7™ chair, and maintains a contemporary designer portfolio of the international first rank with Jaime Hayon, Cecilie Manz and Kasper Salto — Fritz Hansen is a good address in the segment of the canonical Danish design furniture brand with a 150-year collaboration history.
