Calligaris

Calligaris is an Italian furniture company, founded in 1923 by Antonio Calligaris in Manzano (Province of Udine, Friuli) — as a small craft workshop producing the Marocca chair: a wooden frame with a woven straw or sea-grass seat, a typical artefact of the region. In doing so, Antonio Calligaris not only established his company but also helped create what is today known as the "Chair District" of Friuli, which accounts for approximately 80% of Italian chair production. The second generation — son Romeo — led the company through the post-war economic boom. The third generation, Alessandro and Walter Calligaris, took over in the 1960s and 1970s and consistently industrialised the operation; Alessandro Calligaris became sole president in 1986. In the 1990s Calligaris expanded across the entire Italian market and began exporting to Europe and the Far East. In 1998 Calligaris opened its first US subsidiary in High Point (North Carolina). In 2007 L Capital (a private equity fund of the LVMH group) acquired a 40% stake; the family bought back this stake. In 2008 the first Flagship Store opened in Milan, followed by Paris and London.

Current product scope: over 800 products, distributed in 100 countries, from 5 factories. Core categories: chairs (icons: Liberty/Archirivolto-Pocci&Dondoli, Basil/MrSmith® Studio), dining tables with innovative extension systems (including Orbital, collaboration with Pininfarina), sideboards, beds, sofas, home office furniture. Sub-brand: Connubia (chairs and tables, more accessible price range). Materials: wood, polycarbonate, glass, ceramic, metal, leather, fabric. Award: Best Managed Company (2019). Made in Italy. Sustainability: NaturSphere System®, Silver Ion Treatment.

For architects and interior designers, Calligaris is the most broadly positioned Italian furniture manufacturer from the Friulian Chair District — with 100 years of brand history, a product range spanning from design icon to configurable kitchen solution, and a distribution infrastructure that enables worldwide project supply in any market segment.
