Bosc is a French sofa and armchair brand from Hagetmau (Département Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine) — on the edge of the largest forest in Western Europe, the Landes landscape forest of more than one million hectares of pine trees that has existed since Napoleon III's land reclamation act of 1857. The name Bosc means "forest" in Gascon and is therefore a deliberate situating within the natural landscape of this region. The company was founded on 1 April 1964 by Marcelle and Joseph Bastiat, who had met at the Capdevielle factory and learnt their trade there: one in the carpentry workshop, the other in finishing. Their children Alain and Michel grew up surrounded by wood shavings, tools and textiles. Alain Bastiat led the company with his wife Geneviève and decided to create a new brand with a symbolic name — Bosc — based on the craft expertise in cabinetmaking and upholstery for household chairs built up over two generations. Simultaneously a partnership was established with a nearby specialist unit for processing and transforming duck down.

Designer collaborations: Jean Louis Iratzoki (Basque designer; including modular sofa on the duffle coat principle — warmth, versatility and comfort; present at Maison & Objet), Samuel Accoceberry (further key designer).
