Allsteel is an American office furniture manufacturer headquartered in Muscatine, Iowa, founded in 1912 as Allsteelequip Company manufacturing custom metal objects and electrical equipment. In the 1920s the company expanded into kitchen cabinets and refrigerators; in 1936 it acquired the Aurora Metal Cabinet Company to enter the filing cabinet business. Desk production began in 1947; in 1967 Allsteel invented the lateral file cabinet, which went into production in 1969 and became a major commercial success. In 1973 the furniture divisions were restructured as Allsteel Inc.; simplified to the Allsteel brand in 1986. In 1998 Allsteel was merged into HNI Corporation, one of the largest US office furniture groups, headquartered in Muscatine. Allsteel employs around 900 people with annual revenue of approximately $354 million.
