VS Vereinigte Spezialmöbelfabriken is a German family-owned company (GmbH & Co. KG) headquartered at its sole production site in Tauberbischofsheim (Baden-Württemberg), founded on 15 May 1898 as Vereinigte Schulbankfabriken — an amalgamation of four school furniture manufacturers, including Ramminger & Stetter, whose predecessor had already won the Grand Gold Medal at the Paris Inventors' Exhibition in 1891 for the Columbus school bench. By 1907 VS was collaborating with the Deutscher Werkbund; in 1913 the Berlin founding partner held exclusive German rights to manufacture and distribute Montessori furniture. Since 1927 VS has been the largest school furniture factory in Germany. Today the company employs approximately 1,300 people and maintains subsidiaries and offices in Europe, the USA and the Middle East.

The history of VS is inseparable from design history: the wooden skid chair by Karl Nothhelfer (1950, patented 1952) became the world's best-selling student chair — over six million units. From 1994, VS collaborated with Verner Panton; the PantoSwing became an icon. In 2001, VS fitted all administrative workstations of the new German Bundestag in Berlin (Jakob-Kaiser-Haus and Paul-Löbe-Haus) with its Series 900. In 2014, the Richard Neutra furniture collection was added: historic furniture designs by the Californian modernist, produced for the first time or in series for the first time.
