SUGIYAMA

SUGIYAMA (Sugiyama Seisakusho Co., Ltd.) is a Japanese manufacturer of handmade solid iron furniture. The company was founded in 1962 in Seki-shi, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan — originally as a producer of parts for automobiles and railway vehicles, with steel welding as its core expertise. When automobile sales declined, the company made a strategic shift to furniture production, directly leveraging its existing manufacturing facilities and decades of accumulated metalworking knowledge. Seki-shi is one of Japan's most renowned manufacturing locations — known as one of the country's leading knife-making cities — and stands for a tradition of artisanal precision in metalworking in which SUGIYAMA is deeply rooted. Corporate philosophy: "maximize iron's potential" / TETSUKAGU (iron furniture).

Manufacturing model: complete in-house production — from design and planning through fabrication to shipping. Every piece is handmade: what begins as inorganic iron rods and plates acquires "warmth" through the hands of the craftspeople; individual surfaces and textures are created through refined finishing techniques. Made-to-order; lead time approximately 10 weeks; all wood and metal materials used are upcycled. Management: daughter of the founder, who continues her father's work and in doing so breaks new ground in a male-dominated industry. International presence: first exhibition in Milan (Fuorisalone 2023); distribution including through atomi (Mandarin Gallery, Singapore). Listed on Archiproducts.

SUGIYAMA is for interior designers, design collectors and architects working with authentic Japanese material culture the only design address for solid iron furniture from Japan — since 1962, with a production biography that leads directly from an automotive components factory to the international design scene, and a craft philosophy that does not overcome the weight and texture of iron but celebrates it.
