Smeg is a northern Italian family company for household and professional appliances. The company was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla, Province of Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna. The name is an acronym: Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (Emilian Metallurgical Enamelling Works Guastalla). Origins: enamelling and metalworking business. 1955: first own kitchen range brand "Elisabeth". 1963: first washing machine (Leda). 1970: patent for Niagara (the world's first dishwasher for 14 place settings). 1971: built-in appliances. Company logo: designed by Franco Maria Ricci (references to hob burners and oven knobs, with an allusion to the infinity symbol). 1979: Ferrari Formula 1 sponsorship (Gilles Villeneuve). 1997: cult refrigerator FAB28 (1950s retro design in many colours). 2019: acquisition of La Pavoni (household and professional espresso machines, Milan, founded 1905).
