Dauphin

Dauphin is the core brand for office chairs and workplace furniture of the Dauphin HumanDesign® Group, the international holding company headquartered in Offenhausen (near Nuremberg, Bavaria). The company's history begins in 1968 when Friedrich-Wilhelm Dauphin, aged 30, acquired the German operations of the British office chair manufacturer Evertaut and began importing and distributing office chairs in Germany. The British parent company was unable to implement his development ideas, which prompted Dauphin and his wife Elke to re-found the company from their own garage as a family business. The first major order came in 1971 from the government of North Rhine-Westphalia: over 25,000 chairs for tax offices and higher regional courts. In the early 1970s Friedrich-Wilhelm Dauphin developed a groundbreaking construction: office chairs from conically pluggable individual parts that could be packed space-efficiently and shipped economically — a decisive competitive advantage for the export business. Over 85 patent applications and over 150 design patents followed, including the first synchronised mechanism for office chairs. Elke Dauphin, co-founder and partner for over 50 years, shaped the external and internal image of the company with her passion for art and design; in 2001 she received the Federal Cross of Merit for her social and cultural commitment. Since 2011 daughter Antje Dauphin has been a member of the board of directors.
