Ceramica Flaminia
Ceramica Flaminia is an Italian sanitary ceramics manufacturer headquartered in Civita Castellana (S.S. Flaminia km 54, 630, Province of Viterbo, Latium), founded in January 1955 — through a collective founding act: following the failure of wage strikes in 1954, 23 young workers from the ceramics factories of Civita Castellana decided to found their own company. Some took out loans, others postponed their weddings — everyone contributed personally to realising the project. Production began in traditional craft form: ceramists shaping clay, wood kilns without temperature measurement, firing based on experiential knowledge. In 1983 the company was converted into a limited liability company. The decisive design transformation occurred in the late 1990s when Giulio Cappellini was appointed Art Director and introduced a new collaboration philosophy: Flaminia today works with more designers than any other sanitary brand of comparable size. All products are manufactured entirely in Civita Castellana: prototype, modelling, casting, glazing and kiln firing.
Designers (selection): Giulio Cappellini (Art Director), Roberto Palomba (Acquagrande 1997 — large dimensions, minimal lines, geometric rigour; Twin washbasins; Nuda Flat 2017), Jasper Morrison (Bonola — WCs, washbasins, bidets; Morrison: "the quality of Flaminia's production surpasses most of what I have encountered in ceramic manufacturing"), Paola Navone, Studio Nendo (Boll, Double Zero, Make-Up ceramic luminaires), Patrick Norguet. Patented innovation: goclean — a rimless, splash-free, quiet flushing system that radically simplifies the WC form and facilitates cleaning. Further innovations: freestanding washbasins (1990s), concealed toilet seat hinges, modular shower tray Tatami. Export: 70+ countries. Renewable energies in production. Ceramic lighting under the Flaminia label since the 2010s.
For architects and sanitary planners, Ceramica Flaminia is the ideologically most consistent representative of the Civita Castellana ceramics district — with a company history that emerged from a collective workers' movement and has developed over 70 years into Italy's most design-ambitious sanitary ceramics manufacturer, with the densest designer portfolio and a patented flushing system that redefines aesthetics and hygiene simultaneously.
