Interstuhl

Interstuhl is one of Europe’s leading providers of office and workplace seating. Building on its core expertise in seating, the company today also develops holistic office landscapes and spatial concepts. Its roots are in Meßstetten-Tieringen on the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg. The Link family had been practicing the blacksmith’s trade there since 1731. In 1930, Wilhelm Link took over the village forge in Tieringen. When demand for farriery declined after the Second World War, Wilhelm and Werner Link initially produced bases for sewing machines and later added matching chairs for seamstresses working in a seated position. This led to the founding of Interstuhl in 1961. As early as 1962, the Bi-Regulette, a height-adjustable work chair, was patented. The Interstuhl brand name was introduced in 1967 and became the company name in 1995. Today, the independent, owner-managed family business is run in the third generation by Helmut and Joachim Link as managing partners.

The Interstuhl Group brings together several brands and business areas. Interstuhl stands for office furniture, ergonomic seating and modern working environments. Bimos specializes in industrial and laboratory chairs. Backforce was established in 2019 as a brand for gaming and e-sports seating. The group also includes digital solutions such as Goconut for booking and managing workplaces, meeting rooms and parking spaces, as well as Intensor for 3D laser scanning of buildings as a basis for planning. The group-owned company InterTranspo handles furniture transport, assembly and service. A defining feature of Interstuhl is the high level of vertical integration at its Tieringen headquarters, including in-house development, steel processing, powder coating, upholstery, foam production and assembly.

According to the Interstuhl Group, the company employed around 1,050 people in 2024. Group revenue amounted to 220 million euros in 2023, with exports accounting for 40 percent. Production takes place in Germany, Mexico and Slovakia; the group has subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, Mexico, the United States, China and the GCC region, among others. In total, more than 30 million chairs have been produced or sold to date. Interstuhl supplies products to more than 70 countries.

Sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in the company’s strategy. Since the 2021 reporting year, the Interstuhl Group, with its Interstuhl, Bimos and Backforce brands, has been certified by TÜV Rheinland as a carbon-neutral company. Interstuhl itself points to measures such as photovoltaics, biogas use, optimized logistics and the offsetting of remaining emissions. In 2025, the company achieved second place in the Baden-Württemberg Environmental Technology Award with a resource-saving foam technology. In 2022, Interstuhl had already received the Baden-Württemberg Business Medal.

The portfolio ranges from swivel office chairs to holistic spatial concepts. Well-known product lines include VINTAGEis5, the Silver executive line designed by Hadi Teherani, and the sustainability-oriented Eco Up model. With its SPLACES competence field, Interstuhl is positioning itself more strongly as a partner for complete office landscapes rather than merely as a manufacturer of individual pieces of furniture. For architects, interior designers and planners, the company combines seating expertise, in-house production, digital planning tools and project implementation under one roof – from measurement and design planning through to installation.
