Emu (Elettro Meccanica Umbra) is an Italian outdoor and garden furniture company, founded in 1951 in Marsciano (Province of Perugia, Umbria, central Italy) by the Biscarini family. The company began as an ironworks manufacturing metal structures and wire mesh; after World War II it turned to school and office furniture production, refining its PVC coating processes, which led to the establishment of the first plasticisation plant in Italy. Through this protective technology the products became weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use — the beginning of the brand's natural positioning as an outdoor furniture manufacturer. In the 1960s and 1970s, Emu achieved exceptional market success with the Rio armchair (design Emanuel Gargano and Anton Cristell): since its launch over eight million units of this model have been sold. In the 1980s and 1990s, Emu became market leader in the garden sector. From 2010 onwards an intensive collaboration with international designers began and the range was reorganised into the Contract, Design and Garden lines. In 2024, Emu celebrated its 75th anniversary.
