DVELAS is a Spanish design brand for sustainable outdoor furniture and bespoke shade sails made from recovered boat sails, founded in 2009 in Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) by architect and sailing enthusiast Enrique Kahle. The concept arose as a creative reaction to the large quantities of sail material discarded annually by the sailing industry — sailcloths that are no longer suitable for precision racing use but remain excellent in terms of material quality (durability, UV resistance, tensile strength). The sails are collected, washed, re-waterproofed and inventoried in a rigorous labelling routine; from each sail only a limited number of pieces is produced. Each product carries a traceability tag with details of the home port, sail type, vessel and original manufacturer — and thus a piece of documented maritime history. DVELAS exports 73% of its turnover; the main markets are the USA, Japan and Switzerland. The design team comprises architects Enrique and Esperanza Kahle, designer Arraitz Koch and sailmaker Borja Fuentes.
